Abstract

Objectives: To describe the current status and determine some related factors associated with the dietary knowledge among patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery at Military Hospital 103 in 2024.

Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 130 patients being treated at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Military Hospital 103 from July to October 2024. The research tool was developed based on the documents “Clinical Nutrition Guidelines” and “Hospital Nutrition”, validated by three experts, with a content validity index (CVI) of 0.96 and a reliability (Cronbach’s alpha) of 0.89.

Results: 34.62% of patients had good knowledge about dietary regimen, while 65.38% had poor knowledge. Age, place of residence, educational level, living standard, and receipt of nutritional information were found to be associated with dietary knowledge among patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery.

Conclusions: The dietary knowledge of patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery at Military Hospital 103 remains limited. It is necessary to strengthen nutritional education before and after surgery to improve treatment outcomes and recovery.
