Abstract

Objectives: To assess postoperative care needs and evaluate patient satisfaction among women undergoing cesarean section with intrathecal morphine analgesia.

Methods: A prospective longitudinal descriptive study was conducted on 135 women undergoing cesarean section under spinal anesthesia with intrathecal morphine at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from June 2024 to June 2025. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering clinical characteristics, care needs, and patient satisfaction. Outcomes were assessed at multiple time points within 48 hours postoperatively. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0.

Results: Within 48 hours postoperatively, 100% of patients had dry surgical wounds, good uterine contraction, and stable vital signs. Pain levels were generally mild (VAS ≤ 3), with no cases requiring rescue morphine. Common side effects included pruritus (66.67%), vomiting (40.74%), and nausea (37.78%), mostly mild and rarely requiring intervention; no serious adverse events were observed. High satisfaction was reported, with 97.78% of patients satisfied or very satisfied; 97.78% willing to reuse and 97.04% willing to recommend the technique.

Conclusions: Intrathecal morphine is an effective, safe, and well-accepted analgesic method for cesarean section. Its use should be encouraged in clinical practice where adequate monitoring is available, along with proactive management of potential side effects.
