Abstract

Objective: To describe nurses’ knowledge of healthcare-associated infection prevention and identify associated factors among nurses working in clinical departments at Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital in 2025.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 255 nurses working in clinical departments at Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital. Knowledge was assessed using a 36-item questionnaire covering five domains: healthcare-associated infections, isolation precautions, hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, and infection prevention during injection practices and occupational exposure management. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Associations between selected factors and adequate knowledge were examined using odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.

Results: Overall, 78.8% of the nurses had adequate knowledge of healthcare-associated infection prevention. The highest proportions of adequate knowledge were observed for the use of personal protective equipment (82.0%) and isolation precautions (81.6%), whereas the lowest proportion was observed for knowledge of healthcare-associated infections (69.8%). The proportions of nurses with adequate knowledge of hand hygiene and infection prevention during injection practices and occupational exposure management were 73.3% and 73.7%, respectively. No statistically significant associations were found between knowledge and age group, sex, educational level, or years of work experience (p > 0.05). Nurses who had received infection prevention and control training had 11.20 times the odds of having adequate knowledge compared with those who had not received such training (OR = 11.20; 95% CI: 3.75–33.49; p < 0.001).

Conclusion: Most of nurses had adequate knowledge of healthcare-associated infection prevention; however, knowledge varied across domains. Infection prevention and control training was significantly associated with adequate knowledge. Periodic training should be maintained, with particular emphasis on healthcare-associated infections, hand hygiene, infection prevention during injection practices, and occupational exposure management, accompanied by pre- and post-training knowledge assessments.
