Abstract
Objectives: Evaluate depression, anxiety and determine predictors of depression and anxiety in thyroid cancer patient after surgery at the Hanoi Oncology Hospital.
Subjects and methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted on 365 postoperative thyroid cancer patients. The patients’ depression and anxiety levels were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.
Results: The mean depression and anxiety scores of the patients were 5.74 ± 3.62 and 5.65 ± 3.50, respectively. In which, 11.2% of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer were found to have depression, and 7.9% had anxiety. Factors such as age, gender, education level, average income, self-assessed health status, post-surgical complications, and iodine restriction after surgery are statistically significantly associated with the patients’ depression status. Factors such as gender, religion, education level, post-surgical complications, iodine restriction after surgery, and perception of social support are statistically significantly associated with the patients’ anxiety status.
Conclusion: Postoperative thyroid cancer patients should be screened and identified for depression and anxiety to provide targeted nursing interventions based on predictive factors for these conditions. This will help patients cope with depression and anxiety, thereby improving their prognosis and enhancing quality of life.
