Abstract
Objective: To assess the nutritional status and analyze several associated factors among patients with acute pancreatitis treated at the Gastrointestinal Emergency Department of the 108 Military Central Hospital.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 90 patients with acute pancreatitis undergoing treatment from June 2025 to September 2025. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) in combination with Body Mass Index (BMI).
Results: According to the SGA classification; 34,4% of patients were well-nourished (SGA-A), while 53,3% were at moderate risk of malnutrition (SGA-B); and 12,3% had severe malnutrition (SGA-C). Based on BMI, the prevalence of malnutrition was 35,5%, whereas 19,0% of patients were overweight or obese. A significant association was found between malnutrition risk assessed by SGA and gender, comorbidities, and smoking status. Male patients with acute pancreatitis had a 2,2-fold higher risk of malnutrition compared to females. Patients with more than two comorbidities had a 1,5-fold higher risk than those with two or fewer comorbidities. Additionally, smokers had approximately a 2,3-fold higher risk compared to non-smokers (p < 0,05).
Conclusion: Nutritional assessment and screening should be performed at hospital admission for all patients with acute pancreatitis to enable timely nutritional interventions and help reduce the risk of complications.
