Abstract
Objectives: To describe the current status of medication adherence and identify several associated factors among patients with Crohn’s disease at the Gastroenterlogy and Hepatology center, Bach Mai Hospital.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 63 patients diagnosed with Crohn’s disease who were treated with biologics and/or immunosuppressants at the Gastroenterlogy and Hepatology center, Bach Mai Hospital, from January 2025 to December 2025. Medication adherence was evaluated for all patients using the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8).
Results: Based on the MMAS-8, the overall medication adherence rate was 61.9%. While the rate of full compliance (taking medication “yesterday”) was relatively high at 87.3%, up to 84.1% of patients reported difficulty strictly following the treatment regimen. The rate of forgetting medication within the past two weeks was 39.7%, and 7 cases reported self-adjusting (reducing) the dosage or discontinuing use due to perceived worsening of health. Overall, 68.3% of patients occasionally or frequently experienced difficulty remembering to take their medication. The medication adherence rates in the age group under 25, those with university or postgraduate education, urban residents, and students were 6.5, 3.3, 15.7, and 5.8 times higher, respectively, compared to other groups (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Patients with Crohn’s disease demonstrated a moderate level of medication adherence. There were significant associations between high adherence rates and age group, educational level, geographic location, and occupation.
