Abstract
Objective: To describe the current status of nurses’ knowledge regarding standard precautions and to identify some factors associated with this knowledge at Thanh Nhan Hospital in 2025.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 158 nurses across 12 clinical departments at Thanh Nhan Hospital, using an assessment tool developed based on circulars and decisions issued by the Ministry of Health on standard precautions in medical examination and treatment facilities. Data was analyzed using SPSS 20.0, with frequency and percentage tables, and the Chi-square test was applied for univariate analysis of factors associated with nurses’ knowledge of standard precautions.
Results: 85.4% of nurses had adequate knowledge of standard precautions. Factors associated with adequate knowledge of standard precautions among nurses at Thanh Nhan Hospital included: sex (p = 0.038; OR 95%CI: 1.03–7.87); years of work experience (p = 0.008; OR 95%CI: 1.31–8.02); number of patients cared for daily (p = 0.004; OR 95%CI: 1.48–9.23); work-related stress (p = 0.030; OR 95%CI: 1.07–8.71); and prior participation in standard precautions training (p = 0.040; OR 95%CI: 1.24–34.99).
Conclusion: Nurses’ knowledge of standard precautions was at a relatively high level. Five factors were found to be associated with nurses’ knowledge of standard precautions: sex, years of work experience, work-related stress, number of patients cared for daily, and prior participation in standard precautions training.
