Abstract
Objective: To describe knowledge about surgical site infection prevention among nurses at Surgery Departments in Nam Dinh General Hospital in 2020.
Method: Cross-sectional description study was conducted to collect data among 52 nurses at 4 surgical departments of Nam Dinh General Hospital in 2020.
Results: 71,2% of nurses had knowledge about surgical site infection prevention at pass level, 28,8% was not passed. The mean score of was 78,70 ± 1,17, with the lowest score at 55,56 and the highest at 96,30. Among all respondents, 86,5% nurses knew purpose of bathing patients before surgery. More than a half, that is 59,6% nurses knew hair removal method at the skin incision. Moreover, 100% nurses had correct knowledge of the purpose of surgical hand washing and 69,2% nurses had correct knowledge of most appropriate time to use prophylactic antibiotics. In addition, the percentage of nurses had correct knowledge of most effective pre-operative skin antiseptic solution was 44,2%. 100% nurses knew surgical site non-infectious condition. 19,2% nurses had correctly answered on monitoring wound infection detection.
Conclusion: Nurses’ knowledge of surgical site infection prevention is relatively high. 71,2% of nurses had knowledge about surgical site infection prevention at pass level, 28,8% was not passed. The mean score of was 78,70 ± 1,17, with the range from 55,56 to 96,30.
