Abstract
Objectives: (1). Describe the current situation of knowledge and self-care practice of outpatient tuberculosis. (2) Assessment of changes in knowledge and self-care practice of outpatient tuberculosis at Thai Binh City General Hospital after health education.
Methods: Health education intervention study to compare changes knowledge and self-care before - after on 115 people with tuberculosis treated in the consolidation stage being monitored and managed at outpatient clinic from March to May 2021 by using a pre-prepared scale.
Results: The patient's mean score of knowledge about the disease increased from 8.8 ± 1.7 to 12.5 ± 1.2; 12.1 ± 1.6 out of a total score of 18. The mean score of drug knowledge increased from 5.4 ± 1.6, 10.9 ± 1.08, 10.9 ± 1.6 out of 16. The mean score of knowledge about treatment increased by 5.4 ± 1.6 to 10.1 ± 0.8 and 7.1 ± 1.62 out of 12. The mean score of self-care practice increased from 14, 1 ± 1.3 to 22.1 ± 1.3 and 19.4 ± 1.7 out of a total score of 36 at 1 and 2 months after health education. Change in knowledge and self-care practice before and after health education is statistically significant with p < 0.01.
Conclusion: Patient’ knowledge about the disease, treatment, self-care practice is still limited before health education interventions. After health education, their knowledge are improved markedly; This shows the effectiveness of the intervention in improving knowledge and practice for tuberculosis patients.
