Abstract

Objective: Describe the current status of knowledge and practice of using metered dose inhalers of COPD patients treated at Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital in 2024.

Subjects and methods of research: Cross-sectional descriptive study using direct interview questionnaire and practice assessment when observing patients using metered dose inhalers, selecting the entire sample.

Results: The average age of patients is 70.18 ± 11.04, the proportion of patients is 80% male, 64.8% of patients live in rural areas, 31.4% of patients have had the disease for less than 5 years, Patients with educational level from secondary school account for 77.1%. The rate of patients with knowledge of using metered dose inhalers was 46.2%. Some knowledge contents had low results such as: 49.5% of patients had correct knowledge about the time to use the drug; 47.6% of patients knew what to do when using a metered dose inhaler but had difficulty breathing or symptoms did not improve; The rate of patients who practiced correctly in all steps was 21.9%. Education level (p < 0,001), place of residence (p < 0,001), duration of illness (p = 0,035), and knowledge were determined to be related to the knowledge and practice of using metered dose inhalers of patients.

Conclusion: Knowledge and practice of use of dose inhaler within the study was limited.
