Abstract
Objective: (1) To describe the knowledge, practice, and barriers to BSE practice; (2) To analyze factors associated with knowledge and practice of BSE among women attending Vinmec Times City International Hospital in 2025.
Methods: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted, including a quantitative survey of 281 women and 10 semi-structured in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0; qualitative data were analyzed using conventional content analysis.
Results: Half of the women had adequate knowledge of BSE (50.2%), yet only 23.5% performed it correctly. The main reasons for not practicing included perceiving it as unnecessary (69.6%), fear of detecting disease (48.7%), and lack of skills (30%). Family encouragement was strongly associated with adequate practice (OR=29.43), although the confidence interval was wide due to a small comparison-group cell. Healthcare workers were the primary source of information (63.3%); women relying only on other sources (friends, family, media, social media) had markedly lower rates of correct practice.
Conclusion: A significant gap remains between knowledge and practice of BSE, driven by psychological barriers, lack of guidance, and limited supportive environment. Healthcare workers, particularly nurses in breast care settings, have strong potential to play a key role in skill training, psychological counseling, and fostering supportive conditions to enhance breast cancer prevention.
