Abstract
Objective: To assess the foot self-care practice among outpatients with type 2 diabetes in Thai Binh General Hospital after completing a health education program.
Method: The interventional study design used control group was conducted from March 2019 to May 2019 in 104 type 2 diabetic outpatients. The included patients were randomly allocated into two groups with 52 participants received the study’s educational program and 52 others received the common instruction as the control group. The same instrument was used to assess foot self-care practice for both groups and time series with measure before the intervention and one month after completing the intervention.
Results: Before the intervention, no significant differerence was seen in the foot self-care practice between the research group and the control group with the mean scores of 11.92 ± 2.56 points and 12.37 ± 2.72points, respectively (p > 0,05). One month after completing the educational intervention, there was a significant improvement in the foot self-care practice in patients who received the study’s educational program with the mean scores of 15,94 ± 1,81points in comparision with 11,92 ± 2,56points before the intervention (p < 0,001). Meanwhile, no significant difference in the foot self-care practice in the patients of control group before and after the intervention showed with 13,02 ± 2,72 points and 12,37 ± 2,72points, respectively (p > 0,05).
Conclusion: The educational program applied in this study showed the significant improvement in the foot self-care pactice in patients with type 2 diabetes.
