Abstract
Objectives: Evaluate the accuracy in measuring pupil size by neurosurgery nurses on patients with traumatic brain injury at the Neurosurgery Department 1 - Viet Duc University Hospital.
Methods: A cross-sectional study on all 30 nurses providing direct care to patients.
Results: There were 61,3% of pupil size measurements correctly assessed by nurse. Nursing accuracy decreased as pupil diameters increased. Most nurses estimate pupil size were 0,5-2 mm smaller than reality. The accuracy in assessing pupil size was related to the number of years of nursing experience in the field of Neurosurgery (p = 0,002).
Conclusion and recommendations: The level of accuracy in measuring pupil size by nurses was not high. . Phone flashlights or small flashlights should not be used to asess The results of the study should be shared to increase awareness of errors in pupil size assessment practices among neurosurgery nurses. Neurosurgery nurses should be trained about specific instructions on pupil size measurement.
