Abstract

Objective: To describe the quality of life of patients with peptic ulcer disease at the Center for Gastroenterology - Hepatobiliary, Bach Mai Hospital.

Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was implemented among 78 patients with peptic ulcer disease who were inpatients at the Center for Gastroenterology - Hepatobiliary, Bach Mai Hospital, from January 2024 to April 2024. All patients were interviewed using the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire.

Results: General physical health score: 12.8% of patients had poor physical health, and 29.5% had good health. General mental health score: 1.3% of patients had poor mental health, and 67.9% had good health. The average quality of life score was 66.53 ± 20.74; the lowest was 17.42 points, and the highest was 92.52 points. According to the SF -36 scale of patients with peptic ulcer, the quality of ulcers was mainly at an average level of 56.4%, while only 38.5% was at a good level. Analysis of related factors showed that the quality of life was better in the age group < 60 (p = 0.002), female gender (p = 0.03), no comorbidities (p = 0.006), no complications of gastrointestinal bleeding (p < 0.001).

Conclusion: The quality of life of patients with peptic ulcer was mainly at an average level, with a relationship with age, gender, and complications of bleeding.
