Abstract
Objective: To describe the level of caregiver burden and associated factors among primary caregivers of patients with alcohol-induced mental disorders at the Central Psychiatric Hospital No. 1.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 120 primary caregivers. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire including demographic characteristics, the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI-22), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0 with Chi-square tests, t-tests, and Spearman correlation.
Results: The mean caregiver burden score was 61.59 ± 13.05; 62.5% of caregivers experienced a “very severe” burden. Caregiver burden was significantly associated with comorbidity (p = 0.04), patients’ working ability (p = 0.005), social support level (p < 0.01), caregiving time (r = 0.296; p < 0.01), number of hospitalizations (r = 0.310; p < 0.01), and patients’ age (r = –0.189; p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Primary caregivers of patients with alcohol-related mental disorders face high levels of burden, especially when caring for patients with comorbidities, loss of work ability, and low social support. Comprehensive interventions are needed to alleviate caregiver burden.
